About Mapleton, Iowa
Mapleton, situated near the Maple River in Monona County, was platted in 1857 following the extension of the railroad to the area. The town’s name reflects its proximity to the river. In its early years, Mapleton saw the establishment of its first hotel by A.P. Kennedy in 1877, coinciding with the arrival of the first train in October of that year. Over the years, Mapleton has developed a rich history, with institutions like the Museum of American History highlighting both local and national events.

Research Guidance
Follow an address through time
A family name, a familiar street or a story passed down through generations can lead to a closer look at the history of Mapleton. The digital archive shared by the Mapleton Public Library offers a place to begin. When using a directory, compare names, addresses, and occupations across available years to explore the people behind a familiar street. A change in one detail can suggest another household, workplace, or local business to investigate in its historical setting.
Where the available dates overlap, use a directory entry to frame a newspaper search around an address or occupation. Treat matching names as clues, not proof that two records describe the same person. Check the surrounding details before connecting them.
Keep the title, date, page or item reference with each useful finding. Separate the words in a historical account from your interpretation, and note conflicting perspectives rather than choosing one too quickly. These notes help you connect a local story to its evidence and explain what remains uncertain.
